"It is the child's way of learning. This is the path he follows. He learns everything without knowing he is learning it, and in doing so passes little from the unconscious to the conscious, treading always in the paths of joy and love."

A Typical Day’s Schedule

8:30AM
Arrival – Play Time

Outside:
In the play yard children exercise gross motor muscles in free play or more organized games like – hide & seek, duck duck goose, red light green light, farmer in the dell, races, etc.
Inside:
Children may choose toys, board games, blocks, pretend workshop, dolls, cranes, trains and tracks, etc. for pretend play as well as any curriculum materials.

Come inside or Clean-up and Come to Circle

Circle:
Peace candle, poetry and peace pledge; lessons or introductions to new materials, and plans for the day; calendar and group reading of the calendar poem, weather in French, etc. Each child is sent to work by using initial sound games, colors they are wearing, or one child is chosen to call on children who are sitting quietly.
Work Time:
The younger children experience free work choices using one material at a time from the various work areas: Art Studio, Practical Life, Sensorial, the Library, Math, French or English Language materials, Science, Geography, Music, Art Theory, or learning from artifacts offered on diverse cultures from around the world. They work as long as they like and return the materials before choosing another. Teachers interact with the children and give lessons based on the materials the child chooses. Before the oldest children begin free work choices, they are assigned one or two teacher assigned activities, allowing them to begin to acclimate to a teacher’s expectations in non-Montessori environments they might be attending later.

Clean-up

Closing Circle:
The children gather once more. During this circle composers or musical guessing games may be introduced. Books, songs, rhythms, movement activities, discussions or lessons may be offered following themes or curriculum studies. Anticipated plans for the next day may be previewed.

Time and weather permitting the children will dress and play in the play yard until their ride home arrives, or children dress for departure, collect their belongings and wait at a table inside until their ride arrives.
